My Response to "Why We Lie"

Summary:
"Why we Lie" by Dan Ariely explains the multiple experiments held to test dishonesty. He explains how different situations naturally lead people to be more or less dishonest. In every experiment they came to find that we are all are guilty of lying no matter how big or small the lie may be.

Paraphrase Paragraph 10:
We all are aware that a huge majority, if not all, of us cheat. But in what situations do we find people more or less likely to cheat and by how much?

Favorite quote:
"Another thing that boosted cheating: Having another student in the room who was clearly cheating." (Ariely 443)

I picked this quote because it really shows you how society works. How when we see someone else doing it, no matter how bad it might be, we think its okay. We follow under the lead of our peers, we're like sheep. It didn't surprise me when I read that people cheat more when they're influenced by another.

  1. Andrea,
I love the quote that you chose about how having another student cheating boosted the likeliness of more cheating. It's a disappointing, but very true picture of society. More or less the saying "It's all who you compare yourself to." or, "At least I'm not as bad as that guy.". It's a good reminder how we all need to be accountable for our own actions not only because they affect us, but also their effect on others.
Also, I really like how concise your summery is! It's short and to the point.

  2. Andrea:

Good synopsis. I would be careful with your citations. We still need to offer an in-text, or parenthetical, citation in writing when we are summarizing, paraphrasing, or directly quoting. It still is the idea from the author.

  3. I really like the quote that you chose. It's a perfect representation of what i see happening daily at my school. We all just follow the leader that we think is doing something that wont hurt.
